Five members of the C Division have been detained by the Plateau State Police for the shooting and death of Ibuchim Ofezie, a 17-year-old boy, in Jos.
According to a statement released on Tuesday by the state police spokesperson, DSP Alfred Alabo, the impacted officers will face sanctions following a thorough investigation.
It was reported that the cops visited the terminal market and pursued individuals operating unlawfully in an effort to enforce the state’s restriction on the use of commercial motorcycles.
They fired randomly throughout the process, and one of the bullets struck Ofezie inside his market shop.
“The 17-year-old teenager, Ibuchim Ofezie, a resident of the Agingi Village in the Bassa Local Government Area of Jos, was killed by some recalcitrant police patrol agents attached to the “C” Division of the Command, according to the Plateau State Commissioner of Police, CP Bartholomew Onyeka.”
The Commisioner of Police, who characterized the episode as a paradox, emphasized that the legislation gives the police the right to carry weapons in order to safeguard the lives of the populace, not to kill them.
To ensure that the negligent patrol squad does not escape punishment, the commissioner “has ordered the arrest of the officers.”
The Murder Section of the Criminal Investigation Department, SCID of the state, has detained the five cops and is conducting an investigation.
