CBN to Collaborate With Google to Create Virtual Museum

Nigeria Apex bank’s internal information technology department (ITD), according to the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), will work with Google to create a virtual reality museum that will “connect with the global world for the public to sit back and relax within their comfort zone and view the artifacts on display.”

This was said at the 2023 International Museum Day (IMD) event with the subject “Museums, Sustainability and Well-being,” according to CBN Deputy Governor, Operations Directorate, Mr. Folashodun Shonubi.

He claimed that museums continued to play a significant role in both the country’s and Nigerians’ well-being.

In presenting information, amusing, educating, and enlightening the public on the issue as it develops, museums around the world serve as heritage sites that conserve and promote the religious, cultural, and historical worth of the artifacts and materials acquired, according to Shonubi.

The CBN deputy governor emphasized the importance of museums as platforms for enhancing culture and fostering intergroup relations, cooperation, and peace.

He said that as museums have no age restrictions, they offer an informal way to communicate knowledge on many different levels.

There should be no diversity regardless of where you are from because the exhibits in the museums are made to appeal to any audience, regardless of age, ethnicity, or gender.

He claimed that this year’s gathering was particularly special because the apex bank was commemorating Museum Day for the first time since the COVID-19 epidemic broke out and spread in 2020.According to him, it is hard to comprehend the function of museums without considering all the linkages to culture; they are an essential component of our local communities, cultural landscapes, and natural environments.

Mr. Ahmed Umar, Director of the CBN’s Currency Operations Division, stated that technological advancements might make museums more approachable and interesting, assisting audiences in understanding difficult and subtle subjects.

He said, “We are in the process of making sure that our museums have gone digital by way of Virtual Reality Museum where you sit back in your comfort zone and take a view through our currency museum gallery coming soon.”

He noted that the International Museum Day celebration was introduced in 1977 by the International Council of Museums (ICOM) to celebrate museums all over the world.
